Ascent Trip ReportI read that the trail from La Cumbre Peak down to Cathedral Peak was steep, but I guess I didn't read too closely. Much steeper than I anticipated. In fact near La Cumbre Peak it really is a lot of Class 2, and you are using your hands a lot. A very fun trail, but not what I expected, so I guess it was more of a pleasant surprise for how it made me work.
Finding the trail at La Cumbre Peak is not completely straight forward. Given that when I was there it was completely socked in with no visibility, that probably complicated matters. There is a picnic table viewpoint on the La Cumbre Peak spur road loop. The trail shoots off to the right of this by a downed log. Other trails leave to the left of this area, but they are not correct and instead lead to rocks or other viewpoints. Probably not an issue on a clear day.
Otherwise the "trail" is relatively easy to follow and goes very straight down and up the ridge to Cathedral. My lack of visibility due to the fog (well, really I was just hiking inside a giant cloud.) made it a little tougher to gauge my progress. Once you hit the summit block of Cathedral there were several trails that suddenly seemed to appear and lead off in various directions and I had no idea where they went or what might be the correct trail heading beyond Cathedral toward Arlington. With no visibility, I decided to skip Arlington. But the summit of Cathedral was a fun little scramble and an Ammo box register is present a few feet away. No views today, but I imagine it is stunning.
