Ascent Trip ReportExited US 29 North onto VA 130 (Madison Heights) and headed west towards Elon. Turned right onto CR 653, Ambrose Rucker Road, and then made a quick left onto CR 779, Mistover Drive. 4.5 miles drive to the top with the last 1.5 miles on gravel. No problem for low clearance 2wd. On top I intended to park at a three way junction, but due to construction work I took the right fork and drove another tenth or so to a tower where I parked. Off to the right side of the road at the entrance to the tower grounds is a large painted boulder with a clear view eastward.
Note: the road continues down to Crawford Gap, but it is seriously overgrown. Fortunately, an atv had passed thru recently and I was able to travel along the side sloping road towards a small knob along the north running ridge from High Peak. I departed the road and bushwhacked up to the small saddle and then headed up the ridge to that north high point. There is a faint trail of sorts that runs along the ridge and I followed it all the way south to the summit of High Peak. Some bushwhacking was involved. No thorns. Less troublesome, no doubt, in winter. From the towered summit I walked down the middle fork road back to the three way split. The third fork goes hard left up to another tower graced high point. Brush clearing was going on in the area so I simply walked back to my car and headed back down the mountain.
