Ascent Trip ReportI drove from the Crested Butte area on county/USFS 734. Route 811 would also work, but I had a report that it was a rougher road. Upon reaching the pass area, use the topo map to identify the correct spur to the trailhead. There is a sign on the trail to confirm you're in the right place.
The trail to Yule Pass appears to be an old mining road, washed out in a number of places. It traverses steep, loose slopes, and is probably best done later in the season when it is dry.
After reaching the pass, I took the trail down the valley instead of either of the mining roads that head up from the pass. I dropped about 400 vertical feet to an unmapped but very obvious use trail heading right and up toward Yule Lakes.
This trail has an obvious tread until about the area below the tiny lake just under 11,800'. It is less obvious as it crosses some slabby areas, and becomes more obvious again approaching the largest lake. On my way in I dropped on the trail toward that lake, on my way out I traversed higher. I recommend the latter.
Above the two small lakes it is possible to pick a route that is mostly on dirt and vegetation instead of loose rocks.
