Ascent Trip ReportYesterday I had done a long hike to get six of the SB6K peaks in the Pisgah area and today I had wanted to do some more. I had hoped to close out the three I had left to get in the Smokies, but due to an afternoon commitment, I did not have a chance to hit Mt. Kephart. I got to Newfound gap at O’Dark:30 and continued to drive up to the parking lot for Clingmans. Once there, I locked a bike to the bike rack and drove back to Newfound gap. I loaded up my pack with my bike helmet & bike shoes and headed out. I did about the first 2 miles by headlamp. Even after the sun came up, the headlamp was very handy due to many parts of the woods being quite dark. Along the way, I hit Mt Collins, which was really only noticeable by the short push before the summit, a short flat section with the summit, followed by a decent after the summit. After that point, the trail dropped more than I had thought it would before the final push up to Clingmans Dome. I knew I was near the summit of Clingmans Dome as I could begin to hear people, which was strange, as I had not seen a single person on the AT, likely due to the stupid early start time. I turned up the short access trail off the AT, got a picture of the tower incased in fog, and then began the decent to the parking lot on the paved path. I had some strange looks from “hikers” on the paved trail in dress shoes, flip-flops, dress clothes, etc. as I was coming down the paved trail with muddy shoes, muddy legs, and hiking poles. Once back at the parking lot, I unlocked my “shuttle vehicle” and road back to Newfound Gap. |
