Ascent Trip Report Iron Mtn and South Cliffs 9/21/2020
Day 3 of our trip to NH to hike some of the 52 WaV. Again, it is a bit nippy this morning with frost on the ground. The hike starts out as a leisurely walk through some mowed fields. There is a house that has a wonderful view of Mt. Washington and the southern presidential range in the distance.
But don’t the easy start to the hike foul you! There is about 300 yrds to warm up and then it just is a steady straight up! Not much of a trail design, straight and steady on some very lose footing. But hey, at least it’s a short distance to the summit!
Reached the summit of Iron Mtn. Not much to see here but some remnants of what must have been some sort of tower. Spotted one Survey Marker, looks like there should be others as this one is marked “1”, but could not find any others. After just a short pause we continued to the Iron Cliffs. Coming off the summit there is a fairly steep descent into the col. But at least the footing is a bit more solid than the trail up to the summit.
Reached the Iron Ledges. Again we are met with wonderful views on another gorgeous morning. Since this is pretty much off the beaten path and a Monday morning, we do not see any other hikers – the whole mountain to ourselves. We enjoyed a mid-morning snack enjoyed the views and just hung out for a bit before heading back to the car.
Back on the summit of Iron Mtn. Gudi and I both thought that the ascent up to the summit was not as bad as we had expected after doing the descent just a bit ago. We just passed on through continued our “slow and old” pace off the mountain.
Back to the car. This is a nice short hike to some wonderful views out at the ledges. It is a great place if you want to get away from the crowds that is for sure!
