Ascent Trip ReportWe were on our way to the peak of Blue Mountain during a month-long research trip to Jamaica. We left Kingston by road and made it as far as Whitfield Hall, a coffee plantation and guest house at about 4200' that was the overnight stop for many people hiking up to the peak. Unfortunately, as any hardcore Hurricane Bagger will know, Hurricane Gilbert hit Jamaica 2 days later. We were evacuated down the mountain along with everybody else at the house before the hurricane made landfall and spent the next two weeks in a battered house in a battered Kingston until they re-opened the airport. This was probably the most spectacular reason for failing to reach a peak that I'll come up with. At least I hope so.
