Ascent Trip Report

Came from Jacks Gap and after a snack at the picnic bench with a view, crossed the Brasstown Bald Parking Lot and turned onto the Arkaquah Trail on the left. A mea culpa note. The Arkaquah trail was actually closed due to a washout which we found and would have reported however on the other side of the trail we found a note below the kiosk saying the trail was closed due to a washout. I really don't think there was a sign where we entered or at least we didn't see one, sorry. When we got to a high point in the vicinity of Chimneytop, the trail took a sharp descent. From reports I read that the trail went right over the top and you just had to find the high ground near the trail. Well, this wasn't the right place to bushwhack. If you go there, you'll find a slanted rock as is common on summits with some higher ground to its west. Don't go into the thick stuff there. After a difficult slog, finding the highest point in that local area, we ended up back on the trail which ascended to meet us. Later on the real summit was obvious. It's quite pointed and you can see the top to the left from the trail. We clambered to the top and then took the west ridge back to the trail.
