Ascent Trip ReportA long day in the Eastern Sierra to climb Mt Darwin. I'm grateful we decided to bring the rope and climbing gear for this one. We were slowed down by crux of the climb and we were already behind schedule for getting out of cross country terrain and back onto the trail before dark, so we turned around, but not before having a lot of fun with each person trying the crux pitch. It is claimed to be "class 4" but people who have done the route say it's sandbagged and I agree, it's definitely solid class 5. Not to mention quite exposed.
We took an alternative route back down a different drainage (not recommended) and got cliffed out multiple times, resulting in sketchy downclimbing in the dark and some ingenuity with the rope (slowed us down for almost 2 hours). More stories for later when I write a full trip report.
For anyone reading this TR I want to reiterate: for both the cross-country part of the ascent and descent do NOT take the alternative drainage we did on our way back (Helldiver Lakes); stick to the standard route we did for the approach.
