Ascent Trip ReportAfter a morning 'climb' of Laberberg.
From SW, Garmisch, Wankbahn cable car to Wank, small diversion to summit, then descended E to Roßwank and N to Esterberg, mapped trails via Wellheimhütte to Krottenkopf, wooden cross with highpoint a rock outcrop 3m away, also an inconspicuous trig block.
Descended to Wellheimhütte, out and back to Oberer Rißkopf (highpoint just beyond the cross, P103 as mapped, 1956m sign at hut suggests P93, possibly an error), main trail bypassing Kareck, unknown if the ridge traverse goes, no trail on my 2 maps, no visibility), good trail up Bischof, steep and a little exposed in places, cross at summit, easy path down SW ridge continuing up Hohe Frickcen, nice ascent, highpoint just has a trig block. Choice of descents, I choose the shortest, sharp R, (N) at summit, has a discontinuity on OpenStreetMap, which is incorrect/out of date. Initially very slippery mud thanks to heavy rain yday and overnight. L turn is at 1630m, lower than shown on OSM, trail marked with newish orange paint, some older red markings. Gap on OSM when trail crosses a scree gully, then messy area with dwarf pine and steep ground, the old trail possibly lost to avalanche? Entering mature conifers the trail zigzags easily to join mapped track, just above a water intake (the OSM trail shown joining here has no public access), track soon joins the main Esterberg road, easily back to Wankbahn parking.
2h15 from Wank Bergstation, 4h10 down via 3 bonus summits
Next day I climb Geigelstein with Richard and Denise McLellan.
