Ascent Trip ReportFrom NC 184 at the gap north of NC 105 and south of Banner Elk, drive 2 miles up Grouse Moor Drive through the Sugar Mountain resort. Then turn L on Craggy Pointe Lane and wind your way to the top of a development called The Reserve. The paved road leads within 30 yards of the summit, and the trail begins at the end of the road. Be mindful of the parking warnings and don't overstay your welcome. It takes a little agility and nerve to stand on the highest outcropping--particularly when the wind is gusting.
From the top, you'll see that you could have just as easily bagged this peak by waiting for snow and riding the lift up from the Sugar Mountain ski lodge, 1400 feet below.
Sugar Mountain offers the best view of the rugged backbone of Grandfather Mountain--eclipsed in part by a 10-story condominium built on Little Sugar that is known as "The Citadel". Don't grieve over this building--it's the reason we have a ridgetop building ban in NC. As long as it stands as a visible reminder, we don't have to worry about any others. Instead of fretting over how it mars the landscape, take an optimistic panoramic view and appreciate how much unconquered land remains.
