Ascent Trip Report

Overnighted at Peggy's Pond and climbed Cathedral Rock after setting up camp, then headed for Daniel early the next morning.

There is a bootpath for the majority of the route, and the snow slopes are pretty well stepped-out. We did not bring traction as we'd read that the ridge was melted out and the snow slopes were mellow. While this was mostly true, the upper, steeper, slope was slippery in the morning and I would have liked to have at least had microspikes. We ended up bailing onto the exposed rock for the last 50 feet or so, which turned out to be loose, chossy garbage that wasn't actually any better.

We bypassed the east summit and flopped over to the other side of the ridge. I could see how the steep scree traverse below the east peak could be hair-raising, but it felt like a cakewalk compared to the murder scree we had dealt with on Cathedral the previous day. The rest of the bootpath to the main summit was pretty straightforward, if annoyingly loose in places. The summit block itself was short and easy, barely class 3.

Unfortunately a thick layer of smoke blew in on our way up, which made for a hazy, atmospheric summit, but sadly none of the far-reaching views we were hoping for.

Crossing the snow fields was easier on the descent due to the softer snow, but watch for rockfall from the ridge above. We saw boulders of various sizes spontaneously come barreling down the snow while ascending and descending.
