Ascent of Plott Balsam Mountain on 2020-08-30Date: | Sunday, August 30, 2020 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Plott Balsam Mountain | Location: | USA-North Carolina | Elevation: | 6088 ft / 1855 m |
Ascent Trip ReportBagged as part of SB6K challenge. See my 8/30/20 ascent of Waterrock Knob for the full trip report.
From a large clearing at the foot of the summit, a "gate" of sorts is formed by flagging tape wrapped around two trees. The manway to the top is super obvious (one of the most obvious of the SB6K in fact). It's steep at first, but levels out quickly. It briefly skirts a bit of a precarious cliff.
The summit is obvious and has a large boulder to mark it, as well as a NPS benchmark that appears to be fairly new. It's very quiet up here and you can hardly hear the Parkway below. Took a short break here before we turned around back to the parking lot. |
