Ascent Trip ReportThree day trip to climb Redstone.
Day 1: drove from Portland to FS73 Eleanor Creek trailhead. Hiked through Grand Park (watched a bear walk across the meadow along the way) and followed the North Loop trail down to the West Fork of the White River where we had a permit for 2 nights.
Day 2: hiked up the North Loop past Lake James and climbed Redstone. That evening, a bear walked by our camp and got pretty close to my climbing partner in his bivy sack before he realized there were humans in the area and ran off.
Day 3: leisurely hike up the North Loop trail back through Grand Park to the car and drove home.
We followed Chad Painter’s GPX track which was great. The main challenges of this climb are route finding and the steep vegetated slopes, especially on the traverse and final gully- lots of veggie belays hanging on to trees and bushes. The traverse to the summit ridge gully is about 450’ long. From the 5400’ col follow a faint animal trail at the ~5440’ contour west ~150’ to a small dirt gully. Climb up ~20’ and exit the gully climber’s right over a shoulder. Continue traversing around the corner ~100’. You will now see the north side of the main summit block. The gully to the summit ridge still is not visible (ignore the gully on climber’s left). Drop down ~20’ and continue traversing west another ~150’. Round a corner and climb the obvious gully ~200’ to the summit ridge. Follow the boot path on the south side of the summit to a rock gully and scramble up and left to the summit.
The summit register is in a small metal box at foot level below the left most pinnacle. The earliest entry we could find was 1947. The book is starting to fall apart, so perhaps the next climber could bring a new notebook and return the original to the Tacoma Mountaineer’s archives.
