Ascent Trip ReportBagged as part of SB6K challenge.
I was pretty nervous about this one, considering how far it is off trail, but I was relieved to discover the trip out to the peak is actually rather pleasant. When hiking the Balsam Mountain Trail, about a half mile or so from when it meets the AT, there is a sharp "V" in the trail that points southward. From here leave the trail where you will pick up the obvious decommissioned Hyatt Ridge Trail. I followed this until the enormous blowdowns simply became too much of a pain to crawl over, so I left the trail and bushwhacked up to the ridge line. Turning right and heading south, there is a clear manway that traces the ridgeline until it arrives at the summit. The summit itself is marked by a large cairn stacked onto a downed tree. Took about 1.25 hours to get out and 1 hour to return.
