Ascent Trip Report

After driving through Parc du mont Tremblant south from my earlier ascent on mont du lac Raimbault, I made my way on RTE 2 towards my planned trailhead. The park map showed the road as drivable and a parking area near lac Télesphore, but when I neared the junction for RTE 27 at lac Herman, I was faced with a locked gate. I was somewhat miffed but after parking at the lac Herman spur and checking the added distance, I decided that it wasn't going to stop me.

After gearing up, I walked across the road and went around the gate, starting a slight climb on a perfectly good gravel road. The first section was in the shade but when I reached a flatter section crossing marshes, the sun started to make me uncomfortable. Just under 3km in, I reached a junction where the Lariou cabin stood. I considered following the road, but looking at how the dotted line on the map translated to a mountain bike trail in the field, I decided to follow that trail on the western side of the brook.

That path was actually and old 4x4 trail and it would have been manageable in a high clearance vehicle. After meandering south, I crossed path with a biking couple with their dog. Then the trail followed two gullies going west of lac Télésphore before climbing slighly west.

From there I started looking for a suitable place to start bushwhacking. I went all the way to a crest on the trail and dove in. The forest wasn't that dense but there was a lot of blowdown and those large plants with heart-shaped leaves that seem to be common in the southern Laurentians (it may be basswood?). The going was a bit arduous and I wasn't having any fun. I also had a strange pain in my right foot that I attributed to going too fast without warming up on the earlier ascent.

When I checked my GPS, it seemed I wasn't gaining much ground but it was a long bushwhack. I hit a couple obvious old forest trails but nothing was useful so it was a straight-towards-the-goal affair. Just as the slope started to steepen, I reached a small cliff band and had to climb over the short obstacle. From there the forest opened up slightly with the vegetation change. At the top of this steeper section I hit a plateau and had to fight my way through some blowdown and thicker spruce. I went over a bump and then down in a slight dip before spotting the very obvious high point. It climbed a few tens of meters to a rocky nubble in the sparser forest.

After marking the place in my GPS, I started downhill although I decided to bypass the other bump and plateau. I went downhill on a sideslope traverse, which was a good choice. It seemed easier than on my way up. I had to descend the cliff band anyway - it seems to extend quite a lot - but it was manageable. Again I found and tried to follow old trails but it was useless with all the blowdown and regrowth. I was able to follow a similar path as on the way in and eventually made it back on the trail.

The rest of the hike out was uneventful and boring, first on the trail up to the cabin, then on the gravel road all the way back to RTE 2. From there I took the road west and headed back to our campground on lac Monroe where I met with the others.
