Ascent of Goat Mountain on 2020-08-23
|Date:||Sunday, August 23, 2020|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5407 ft / 1648 m|
Ascent Trip ReportTook the standard route from US12 (FS 25>FS26>FS2612) which is paved almost the whole way in mostly good shape and definitely doable in a low clearance vehicle. The trailhead is signed and Trail 217 is the main trail for 90% of the route. The trail is very well maintained until the point where Trail 217 turns to the right and heads down towards Deadman's Lake and where the unmaintained trail to Goat Mtn continues straight ahead (roughly mile 4.7-5.0). This trail fades and out but the objective is fairly obvious. There is a short rocky section (~50ft+) before the final stretch to the summit that involves some Class III+ scrambling with a couple small slightly exposed sections, nothing crazy though. The last little is just a flat walk through the wild blueberry bushes to the unmarked summit with an amazing view.
If doing all three Goat Mtns I highly recommend ascending Middle Goat from the east as you come up (better defined trail) and East Goat from the west side either as you come or heading down (short walk up).
