Ascent Trip Report3rd summit of White Mountain Peak. This time I took some friends from SAMO so they could get some training hiking a high-altitude peak before Mt. Whitney. We drove up from L.A. Saturday evening and arrived at the trailhead just before midnight, and set up camp real quick. I don't think I slept at all. We got up at 5 AM and started on the trail just after 6 AM. Made it to the summit just before noon. On the way back, some thunderstorms developed as we neared the Barcroft Research Station. It was scary, as we were totally exposed up there on the windswept plateau. As we got back to the trailhead, it started pouring and hail (graupel) fell on us. Meanwhile, in the Owens Valley below, it was about 100 degrees. Camped at Sage Flat above Big Pine that evening.
We saw plenty of marmots, bighorn sheep, and Campito, the lone horse of the White Mountains.
