Ascent Trip ReportFrom E, road above Spigno Saturnia Superiore. I lost patience with the loose rocky road and parked at 650m, wide verge. As it turned out, I'd done the hard part: round the corner and upwards wasn't so bad, so if you get to 650m, might as well continue; (alternatively limited parking at end of surfaced road, 540m). But an easy walk from 650m on an old road climbing in steep zigzags, shorter than the 'main' road, shady and quite pleasant in 30deg early afternoon heat, beetles churring their rachety love songs from the trees. Petter Bjorstad's 920m trailhead when reached had a single car, a Freelander 4x4. My zigzag road (possibly an old military road? Too wide and well built for a mule track) continues to col with signpost, then OpenStreetMap shows 2 trails L, the first along the crest to the summit; the second contouring below R of it, well below the summit. I initially take the lower one which is easy walking, changing to the higher one where the two nearly meet. There's initially no sign of a trail, but higher up I find some clear sections, intermittent. I think the OSM track is only accurate in parts: I find more of the trail on the way down. The route is through open beechwood, so it's never difficult. I visit a cairn on an open section of ridge, which the OSM track visits but I think the actual trail skirts to the R of.
The summit has a square concrete trig pillar, topped with an IGM plaque dated 1935, some comms equipment and a helipad. I head down the same way: I think my downward track is reasonably accurate, more so than OSM, until the last 300m before the paths' near-junction, which I failed to work out. For variety I walk the main road down; the Freelander is still there. 2h up, 5mins on summit, 1h30 down.
Next to Monte Maggiore, a much more interesting end to the day than I expected!
