Ascent Trip Report

After having climbed Pic des Méandres in Charlevoix, I drove back towards Québec. Along the way, heavy rain started and by the time I was back in town and heaving north on HWY 73, I knew I was going to face a wet ascent. I made my way in Stoneham and past the ski resort to the trail parking.

I took my rain jacket out and quickly geared up to leave on the trail as a family was coming back from a hike and taking refuge in their car. I crossed the open area and got in the woods, following the Stoneham loop trail. A trail runner crossed my path a bit further up, just before I noticed a path that joined with an old jeep trail. I started following thaat and noticed my GPS wasn't on. After getting it ready and fixed, I kept going.

At some point the forest trail took a sharp turn and I decided to start the bushwhack from there. It started moderately steep but soon it got quite hard, especially with all the wet logs strewn around. Higher up the spruce were denser but it wasn't as bad as a bit further north in the Laurentians.

It was still quite warm even with the rain and I had to take a few breaks to cool down on the way up. Closer to the summit, the terrain flattened and it wasn't too hard to navigate to the correct bump, mark it in the GPS, the retreat downhill. I followed a different way down, trying to keep on the path of least resistance, but I veered away a bit too much and had to correct course to rejoin the jeep trail.

From there I retraced my steps and ran the rest of the way back to the parking where I quickly changed into dry clothes before taking the road back towards Québec.
