Ascent Trip Report

Successful ascent of Luftee Knob, Mark’s Knob, Mount Sequoyah and Mount Chapman. Hiked from Pin Oak Gap to the AT via Balsam Mountain Trail. Stopped to pick up Luftee and Mark’s on the way up. Complete bushwhack to Luftee, but not far from the trail. The old Hyatt Ridge Trail (decommissioned), provided a relatively easy route to Mark’s. This was easier than expected. Stopped at Tricorner Shelter to drop off the big pack and wait out one of 6 rain showers on the day. Took the day pack and headed south on the AT to Sequoyah, which is basically on the AT. On the way back, picked up Chapman. The herd path leaves the AT at the northern ridge line of Chapman and heads south. Fairly easy to follow. The summit was very overgrown, but I managed to find the cairn. Camped at Tricorner shelter. Picked up Yonaguska on the way back down Balsam Mountain Trail. This was the most difficult peak to get to. Never found a herd path, so a complete bushwhack. After more rain, decided not to attempt Big Cataloochee. Trail was overgrown and in need of maintenance. Also very slippery in the mud on the descent.
