Ascent Trip ReportThis report recounts how our hike continued after climbing Silver King. As we descended from the summit, Greg and I followed the spine of the open southern ridge as it gently swung east until it ended abruptly at a thick band of trees near a large rocky outcropping that would have made further travel difficult. At that point, we dropped 100’ south off the ridge, then traversed southeast through the sparsely treed meadow, staying high and roughly parallel to the ridge. We maintained this bearing as long as we could, but thickening bands of trees gradually forced us to descend more in a southerly direction. We managed to stay moderately high through the west-facing drainage off Three Way Peak which put us a short climb away from the top of a saddle on the southern spine of Three Way. A quick up-and-over and we descended an open, east-facing meadow just to the side of a slope full of talus and converged with the Pacific Crest Trail. Once on the PCT, we followed it northeast for 0.27 miles. There we left the trail and ascended up a meadow in a NNW direction, staying to the right of a large rocky finger coming down from the east ridge of Three Way Peak. The meadow climb was short and gradually became constricted by steep, narrow gullies. We carefully picked our way through this section and a narrow path towards the climber’s left became more apparent. A well-worn boot path helped confirm that many others had gone this way before. A few more series of zig zags up the steep ravine and we found ourselves on the crest looking up at the mostly bare eastern ridge of Three Way Peak with a clear line of sight all the way to the summit. We realized we were passed the crux, and with a feeling of elation, strolled the final few hundred feet up to the summit to reap our reward. It did not disappoint in any way.
