Ascent Trip ReportOn our way out of Yellowstone, we had some extra time so I wanted to see if I could run up this one real quick. Well apparently I needed to do a lot better planning, because I started at Sylvan Lake picnic area (Shalee stayed back to relax). Tried hiking with the cat but he wasn't cooperating so he went in the backpack. Went straight up the south slope, which was not pleasant at all. Thought I would meet up with the trail which I thought came up from the southwest side, which it was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE. Got to the scree, and it was just miserable. So loose. The wind came out of nowhere and was extremely strong. Probably some of the strongest winds since I moved here. Finally I got up to the top of the ridge and it was easy from there besides being blown sideways off my route here and there. Cat hated the summit, probably shouldn't have brought him up. Descended via the trail until I had to cut back across for a woodsy bushwhack back to Sylvan Picnic area. Lesson learned on this one, do your research even on the most mundane peaks. Still great views across to the tetons. |
