Ascent Trip Report

After this morning's Monte Amiata ascent.

From SSW, 5 Euro charge to drive up to Campo Imperatore. Up via W ridge, down via N ridge, seems the most popular combination. 4hr circuit moving fairly quickly in cool conditions, a little easy scrambling.

Afternoon ascent having driven across from Amiata, surprisingly pleasant conditions, 24C and breezy. Zigzags up to rifigio busy on a sunny pm, visited Picco Confalonieri 2422m P107 which the path bypasses, descended path to Sella di Monte Aquila, tempted by Direttissima route, but solo, afternoon already and felt I'd used a life up yday on the Pisanino descent! On the west ridge I recognised the area where I'd turned back previously due to lack of crampons. Not sure I'd want to solo this ridge in crampons either, quite long and exposed in places. Pleasant today, good paint markings. Somehow I bypass the summit and have to reclimb short section of north ridge. Summit deserted, has a modern GPS trig bolt at highest point (so height should now be accurate to 0.1m), a 6cm IGM bolt lower down, a cross and a CAI direction marker.

I'm up in 2h10, spend 10mins on top (chilly breeze, nice clouds and views) then descend the paint marked N ridge trail (easier than W ridge and much shorter, then easy angled slabs N and stony path W, to join base of W ridge, all obvious and easy. Down in 1h40; by 6pm car park is emptier but still quite busy. Dinner and plan my next move: I've climbed 3 ultras in 3 days but there'll be no more for a week.

Next morning I climb Monte Sirente.
