| Date: | Tuesday, July 21, 2020 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | Car | Peak: | Caudal | Location: | USA-New York | Elevation: | 3320 ft / 1011 m |
Ascent Trip ReportLeft trailhead around 10:10 AM. Stopped for brief break at sign in box. Reached Caudal at approx. 11:07. Camel's Hump at 11:30. Thomas Cole at 12:05. Black Dome at 12:30. Mostly hiked straight through, with a brief break at Camel's Hump on the way up and the way down. Thought to attempt Blackhead, but too distant (turned around at 12:55). Also stopped on Black Dome on the return. Reach trailhead at 15:35 (approx. 5:25 round trip). Crossed paths twice with two individual hikers who likely came from trailhead on Big Hollow Rd. Both between Thomas Cole and Black Dome. Otherwise quiet. No other hikers at my sign in box upon departure; one after me (presumably one of these two). Personally, I found the distance/grade between Thomas Cole and Black Dome to be not insignificant! Additionally, I found Thomas Cole to be about 3 full miles from the trailhead, vs. 2.6 (per AMC Catskill Mountain guide book). No great views at any point, though the meadow on Camel's Hump, and the smaller one btwn Camel's Hump and Thomas Cole (with a view of Thomas Cole) were both enjoyable. Also, fire tower on Hunter Mt. clearly visible from overlook on Black Dome, and useful for orienting. |
