Ascent Trip Report

The trip started out with hitches. They did not have my rental 4 wheel ready and waited 40 minutes. Then I drove to my first hike of the day and it was getting late and very hot. I stopped in the town of Virginia City and it was 98F ! and it was a tourist town. I could not find a grocery anywhere nor a gas station and I needed drink to go up this peak. I ended up driving past 2 more towns with no water. 20 minutes later down by a highway I found a gas station and stocked up for my trip.

Now it was late in the day and I drove up near the water tower tank and parked. It was still 98F and nearing 3:30. Next goof. I did not like the look of the 4 wheel drive road up the peak it was steep and full of cobble stones so I headed up a more gradual track to the left and then realized it would not take me to the summit. Ughhhh

I looked on an aerial in my PB ap and spotted a straight up use trail to the summit. It was nasty thick terrain with loose scree and sand and I had no poles with me. Every step was a backslide in scorching hot air and on the lookout for rattlesnakes the entire way. Making it worse, there was weather coming in too.

So seeing my nasty micro zigzag trail up I do not recommend in the heat of the day and without poles!

At the summit rain was heading in so I abandoned the idea of getting extra credit OPhir Hill and just bushwhacked all the way down trying not to twist and ankle. All and all a miserable route and start to my adventures but each hike after this got better and better
