Ascent Trip ReportWanted to hit all three of the 6,000’s in this area. Got to Carver’s gap about 7:40 AM and was surprised that the parking was almost full, but I did not see anyone else. (Turns out that it was likely most of the people camping on the Balds or AT section hikers.)
Left Carver’s gap and headed south on AT. Got to split for the shelter, but decided to hit Roan High Knob on the way back so I kept south on the AT. Got to the split by the parking lot to head over to Roan High cliffs. I was there early so no cars were in the parking lot. I could see how later in the day and on a weekend, it would be a zoo. Walked the road over to the Cloudland trail to get to Roan High bluff. Once at Roan High Bluff, I had to actually go past the warning due to repair of the vegetation to snag the peak and the benchmark.
I then headed back to the AT and north. Near the summit of Roan High Knob, I was looking for a manway/clear bushwack for the summit but did not find one. I then just took the trail to the shelter and the summit is about 100 feet from the shelter. I would not advise the bushwack when the trail is right there and short.
I then headed back to Carvers Gap on the AT. By that time, it was packed and the trail was something almost like pictures of the Hillary Step on Everest. Lots of people out to get just to the balds. I kept going until the trail spur to Grassy Ridge Bald. That was straightward with some narrow sections when you are passing people. Made it to the summit, took the picture and heading back to Carver’s Gap. When I got back about noon, it was a zoo at this point.
All told, less than 4 hours total with 11.4 miles (by SB6K & 11.8 by GPS). The section to Grassy Ridge Bald was harder than I expected after the other peaks. Looking at the profile, I think it was due to the ups and downs. The first part was climbing and more level.
