Ascent Trip ReportOur 1st venture into the Catskills without a fire tower. We parked at around 10 o'clock and spent almost exactly 4 hours hiking, my distances as usual were a little lower than Jordyn's, although this time it may have been because she dropped some stuff and had to go back and get it... The trail was rocky, muddy in spots, and easy to follow.
Immediately after signing in an aggressive climb begins. I was a little concerned because I was not expecting it to be so steep. However, at 0.8 miles it levels off right where the trail splits. Turn left and go another 0.8 miles to hit the ledges. This section has long periods of flat interspersed with short ascents of varying steepness. Just before the ledges there is a steep climb through big boulders. According to my app, ledges were at 1.5 mi and took just under an hour. We continued on to Panther, and the trail became muddier but continued to alternate flat and climb. There were some more sections with bigger boulders and a descent into the col. Reached the summit and passed it, found second outlook and passed it, then returned for lunch at outlook (There was nothing we found that marked the summit, so I am assuming that is what we did based on prior information). My app said 3.3 miles 2h 13, But we did stop for a few minutes on one of the ledges and I also did not pause my app for the entire time Jordyn backtracked.
Returned along same route - when we reached the ledge the trail had become quite crowded.
Total time 4 h 4 min
I hate to say I was not that impressed with the view - perhaps if it were less hazy we could have seen the distant mountains more clearly.
