Ascent Trip Report2020-07-09: Started from Klimpfjäll after breakfast at the hotel. Turned North in Stalon and via a gravel road to E12 South of Tärnaby. We stopped to get some groceries and continued to Naturrum in Hemavan where we parked Signe. Got the boots on and started through the King's Trail portal next to Naturrum. The trail starts in the woods and climb quickly onto the alpine tundra with just some very low vegetation and rocks. We passed two ski lifts. These were closed this summer due to the Corona. Arrived at the Viterskalsstugan where the hosts Helena and Fredrik welcomed us, showed the facilities and pointed out a bunk bedroom for us. We made coffee and later, dinner. Took care of the dishes outside. More groups arrived and we talked to one of them that came from the summit. We asked about the condition and if there is a lot of snow. Went to bed early.
2020-07-10: I woke up early and started preparing breakfast. Took care of the dishes and we headed out. The higher part of the mountain was hidden in clouds. Nicely marked trail with orange blazes on the rocks. I made a few waypoints on the way up to be safe if the fog would come in on our return. A steep section on snow was the harder part of the trail. We kicked steps when going up and used them going down. We reach the ridge and descended some, on snow, it leveled out and we passed the safety hut and the trail started to ascend again, to the summit. The wind was cold and the rocks were icy, but just on one side. It is visible on the summit cairn in the picture. No view from the summit as we were in the clouds. We turned back to the safety hut and rested there, with lunch. Sun came out for a short while and we could enjoy the nice view from the top. Hiked back to the hut. Made it back in about 6 h for the round trip. Got beer and potato chips to celebrate the successful climb. This climb is the 21st and last to finish the County highpoints of Sweden. 2020-07-11: Packed the gear and headed back towards Hemavan after breakfast, dishes and cleaning. Got the stuff back into Signe and headed to Tärnaby for lunch at a bakery. Continued to Arjeplog where we checked in to the Kraja camp site. We set up the tent next to the Sällá lake - we were the only party with a tent! There were huts to rent, RVs and caravans but just our tent. The Sällá lake is next to the Hornavan lake - the deepest lake in Sweden. |
