Ascent Trip Report

It was forecasted to be 117 in Borrego Springs on 7/12. I happened to be in the area so I decided why not try for a summer bag of one of these desert peaks? Note there are very few summer ascents in the PB DB. Temps for 5am was supposed to be around 90, which is bearable. I decided I would start at 4 (really only started at 4:20) and try to summit via the main route and descend via the ridge route for an 11.5 mile loop. I jogged along the road from Peg Leg Marker to the main route. I reached the start of the climb at 5am. Sunrise was anticipated at 5:45am. At the start, my water bottles had ice in them. At this point, the water was hot. Not warm - hot. I started up the route, which is very rough, no real trail to follow until you reach the ridge. I got to about 1,400 ft in about 30 minutes. Super windy, and still hot. I decided it would not be a good idea to try and continue. On the descent it actually got much less windy and cooled down significantly - strangely, it wasn't until after sunrise that it felt the most pleasant temperature-wise. I also noted the summit doesn't get direct sun until about 25 minutes after sunrise due to it being obscured by Rabbit Peak from the East. I went cross country around the ridge to get back to the car, avoiding the road. Got 10 miles in and was back to the car by 7am. I will try this again sometime!
