Ascent Trip Report

The highest point in the Kananaskis ranges and a great viewpoint along the Highwood Pass area, Mt. Rae was on my 'hit list' in the summer of 95'.
Fairly straightforward approach from the Ptarmigan cirque hike, then a ridge scramble and a traverse of some slabs - that was the route. Unfortunately, this peak has some of the most unstable, rotten rock that I've seen anywhere. That made it both slightly risky and also less enjoyable than, say Gap Mountain, Mount Tyrwhitt or Mount Wilcox, just to name a few scrambles with similar terrain and character. I still enjoyed summitting what is a major peak, albeit with only a 1000 m elevation gain necessary.
-Took an ice axe along but it wasn't necessary and almost became a complicating factor in its own right.
