Ascent Trip Report

Last day of a 4 day trip around Darwin Bench. Camp at the highest lake below the Keyhole was a bit inhospitable but we wanted to get a bite out of the last day. There are some very fine campsites around the lower two lakes. Easier going up than down this side as there is a narrow cliff band at 12,240 feet around the base of the west slope you could get caught up in just coming down a random spot. We found a break in it requiring a couple simple class 3 moves but then leading to a chute with plenty of solid footing the rest of the way up... it had looked like a sandy nightmare from a distance.

Descent to Lamarck Lake was interesting as there was about a mile of the most tedious boulders I have ever encountered. The boulders in Goethe Cirque seem like a speedway compared to this. Usually these don't bother me but these were about small car sized so not a lot of simple hopping from boulder to boulder. The standard route seems to be out of Piute Pass. Not sure which would be faster. Even though we didn't regret the route choice at all we won't be back in this specific area ever again.
