Ascent of Rubicon Peak on 2020-07-01
|Date:||Wednesday, July 1, 2020|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||9183 ft / 2798 m|
Ascent Trip ReportSteep as to be expected with 2,000 ft of vert in 2 miles. The first mile was surprisingly more roll-y than I thought it would be (700ish ft) Mile two has 1,100 ft of gain and is more rocky. The trail is easy to follow until the last quarter or mile so before the summit scramble. Once the rocks become more plentiful you see the main trail turn into a few different faint trails. We just picked a line at that point.
In terms of the scramble- it felt true class 3 to us. The rock is solid. If the climbing feels sketch- there is an easier way. We followed the trail too far south and towards the end of the summit block. That is not the correct way to ascend. We backtracked our steps and ended up heading pretty much straight up the middle of the summit. The route we went up looked like the easiest way and felt like class 3. At the top we did have to traverse the ridge north over to the highest section of rock but that as no more than 50ish feet.
