Ascent Trip Report

Access: We originally planned to do Old Dominion Mountain the following day, but after being unsuccessful in finding a motel in Colville for the night we decided to drive to the top of Old Dominion Mountain and car camp for the night. I used Google Maps and it got us to the summit from Colville without any navigational issues. Upon leaving paved roads, we took Road 4868 / NF-9411 which was riddled with countless potholes, giving me Mount Pilchuck flashbacks. East of Old Dominion Mountain we turned onto NF-130, which took us to the summit. I nominate NF-130 as one of the dumbest roads ever. It meanders around aimlessly, seemingly never gaining elevation in an efficient manner. It was also heavily rutted in areas, rocky, and brush was encroaching on the road for much of its length. The washout area mentioned in previous reports has been fixed and now there is enough room to get past it, although it was a bit sketchy after dark. High clearance is required and you will get some new pin-striping on your vehicle.

The Climb: From the parking area it is just a quick walk up to the summit where there is a benchmark and the foundations of a lookout. We summited after 10 PM and had views of a lit up Colville in the valley below. The parking area was not very flat so we headed back down the road and slept in our cars at the first switchback on NF-130.

My Thoughts: The horrible approach road really made this an unpleasant mountain overall, but I did enjoy the nighttime views from the summit. If you are a p2k buff, then Old Dominion Mountain must be bagged. If not, then skip this one and save yourself the time and paint on your car.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so feel free to contact me if you want to team up.
