Ascent Trip Report

Very long day from Upper Works. Unexpectedly beautiful along the lower trails with many wildflowers, butterflies, frogs and toads, views of high peaks and other mountains at some points. May have heard a moose. Bridge over Opalescent River is out; was able to cross over rocks, as the water was fairly low. Hike mate waded through. Easy to cross Allen and Skylight Brooks. The "slime" was minimal but still used caution as slippery. Mud pretty deep in some spots. Herd path easy to follow in some spots. That last 1.3 mile or so past the waterfall was tough; it's where pretty much all the elevation gain is. Hiker alerted us to a 3 rock cairn as where to cross over to the left at the slide. Didn't see it until we had kept to the right and came out in the woods above it (crossed at the cairn across the slide upon descent and it was more difficult to me...some slime and not as "stable" feeling.) Nice views of high peaks coming into view in some areas. A view to the left near summit, then a summit sign on a tree. Just past the sign in a big nice view, not to be missed. Headed back down. Several hours in the dark with headlamps; fireflies, moths fluttering around, birds singing, ducks honking.
