Ascent Trip Report

Drove down Friday. Camped at ranch gate. Only other hiker there before dark was Jill. Had a great talk with Carlos when he came by before dark. I was with John Maguire and Sean Kurzweil. We checked in and everyone easily drove up to the 4x4 TH. Started hike at 7:00am on the nose. Hike up to the ridge is pretty steep. Random boulders/rocks, lots of soft soil and what I assume was mole tunnels. Got to top of ridge in 1 hour. Stayed on the ridge all the way to summit. John and I went across and did Red Mountain, which added about 1.5 hour to the hike. Sean headed back down and we met him at the car. There were only two other hikers who did Red - Jill and a guy from Nebraska named Kelly Crawford, who we didn't actually meet until we were checking out at the end. I think there were some air force guys on the Culebra summit when John and I resummited. They gave me a swig of whiskey - probably not the best choice during a pandemic. Weather was great. Sunny, only a few clouds in the late morning. Really windy on the way down to saddle between Culebra and Red.
