Ascent Trip ReportStarted from the Walker Knob Overlook, then westbound on the Mountains-to-Sea trail. This parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway, following a ridgeline south past a few overlooks. The trail is easy to follow and not technically challenging, though it had a few hazards to watch out for. There were patches of grass between knee and waist high, wet and droopy with dew, which transferred all of that dew to my pants as I passed, then it all drained into my boots so I did the rest of the hike with wet socks, which wasn't ideal. And the patches of head-high brush along the trail were all abuzz with bees when I went by - I kept moving and they didn't bother me.
Past the Greybeard overlook the MST once again goes into the trees for a few hundred yards before crossing the Blue Ridge Parkway. About 10 yards before the MST crosses the parkway, a spur trail goes off to the left, which is the trail up to the summit of Craggy Dome.
The summit of Craggy Dome is covered in shoulder-high brush, though I was able to get up on a rock for some great views in all directions.
Back the way I came to the Walker Knob Overlook parking area, then I continued eastbound on the MST to Blackstock Knob. |
