Ascent Trip ReportA drive up on increasingly rough roads. From the sleepy town of Clayton, you'll take the road leading off of Van Horn Dr, initially a good quality gravel road. Up on the ridge, you'll pass by several homes, some with quite blatant signage! You'll also have some views of your objective. The last mile or so has some rocky areas, some rutted areas, and a few slightly steep sections--nothing too bad for my CR-V, but might give a passenger car driver some trouble. I was able to drive all the way up next to the lookout tower and a few abandoned homes right at the summit area. High ground was either under the tower or in a blackberry brier patch a few dozen feet away. The tower was missing its lowest half-dozen steps, but this was easily surmounted and I went about halfway up, content to get high enough to see the stunning 360-degree views from the top in the late afternoon light. With the lookout tower, this had by far the best views of the trip, and despite saving it for my last Oklahoma P1K probably costing me an extra few hours of driving, it was worth it. I explored the dilapidated house a bit, then drove back down.
