Ascent Trip Report

I bagged this peak as part of an Edwards/Grays/Torreys combo from Argentine Pass TH. I drove from Lakewood starting at 1:30am and reached a snow block on CR-260 before it turns into Peru Creek Rd. by 3 am. I started hiking 30 minutes later making my way to the true Argentine Pass TH. It turned out to be 1.45 miles from the car. I was hoping to reach the pass by sunrise but missed it after being slowed down by multiple patches of snow. I should have brought my crampons but figured I wouldn't need them after reading some other reports. Turns out it would have been helpful. Fortunately the patches were small enough to crawl over without exhausting myself. Still a little annoying. It was 2.49 miles to the pass from the TH and it was still beautiful payoff to see the sun just barely above the horizon. Another 1.06 miles brought me to the summit of Mt. Edwards. There wasn't much at the summit, just a single piece of re bar sticking up from the ground. It was quite a scramble across the ridge towards Grays. The 1.35 miles to the Grays' summit felt a lot longer because of it, especially having to stop and route find a couple of times. The first people I ran into were on Grays Peak and the trail between it and Torreys was full of hikers (about 0.8 mi). After summitting Torreys I was pretty beat and took a longer break. Then in order to drop back down into Horseshoe Basin I had to climb back up Grays and descend the other side. I was lucky there were long patches of snow I used to glissade down the West side of Grays towards Grays Lake. I saved quite a bit of time using this method all the way back to Peru Creek Road. After joining back up with the maintained road I began to see more day hikers. The weather was clear up until about 10:30am when clouds started to form. Temperature was pleasant throughout the hike and warm by the time I returned to the car. Out and Back it was a 12.13 mile hike with 7.17mi on the ascent trip (Car to Torreys) and 4.96mi on the descent (Torreys to Car).
