Ascent Trip Report

In 1996 the summit area of Tai Mo Shan was a military compound like it still is today. I don't know if the soldiers there at the time were British or from the PRC, since planning for the 1997 handover was well along at the time. Either way, I could tell right away that I was not getting in. I had to walk the fence-line to get as high as I could and then record this as an unsuccessful ascent.

My approach was on the subway/metro to Tseun Wan, then a bus up the Route Twisk to the high point of the road, and then hiking on a disused old road with cracked pavement to near the top. I was in and out of clouds for most of the hike.

Hong Kong's highest hill is crowned with a radar station, now probably controlled by the Chinese Army and even harder to visit than it was in 1996 (1996-07-13).
