Ascent Trip ReportThis may just be my favorite hike of all-time. Maybe it’s from nostalgic purposes since I spent my child hood camping and deer hunting across the canyon from it, but maybe it’s just an awesome hike!
The hike is definitely a true wilderness hike! This peak lies in the middle of the wilderness surrounded by deep canyons. Around 2 miles into the hike you descend into the Tanglefoot Canyon and come out the higher south side which puts you at Moraine Lake. There were a couple of tents setup here for the weekend and would make a great basecamp for hiking the peak if you wanted to break up the mileage. From here, you follow the trail a couple miles and then there are a few sets of cairns marking to go cross country. This section is around two miles and pretty easy walking since there isn’t much undergrowth as it works up the western shoulder of the peak. During this section I ran into Scott and Sean King making their way down. Pretty random to run into somebody you know in the middle of a forest!
After breaking out of the tree line and the summit stands in front of you, a giant pile of talus that wasn’t too hard to navigate. There is a little bit of snow left through here, but it’s easy to navigate around or over.
The views on top are amazing! We had low clouds rolling through that made the views change constantly, but obstructed seeing long range.
It’s a full day if hiking, almost 9 hours for us with 30 minutes on top. The drive from 88 to the TH takes about 35 minutes.
There is also no register on top, I turned over every rock and couldn’t find anything. This peak really deserves one!
This is the premier hike in this region, change my mind.
