Ascent Trip Report

Started at the lower 2wd trailhead on the west side (below Rainbow TH) at 530. No rain but observed in the distance, appeared to be a scattered shower moving away. Walked the road up to the rainbow trail, went left and uphill. At the crest of the hill we then turned right onto the herd path for the ridge. The herd path is not marked but is very obvious. Somewhere along the way it began to rain, donned rain jacket but should have also added the pants. We made our way out of the trees into the krumholtz where we encountered some snow which was mostly avoidable. Above the krumholtz the upper mountain was completely clear of snow but now started raining harder. The last 300 ft. We’re the worst, the wind was increasing and the rain became a rain/snow mix. At this point, I didn’t want to stop but just summit before breaking to add layers etc. my hands became really cold and I just was wishing to be done to take a proper break to add gloves. Adam summited first and was bookings it down slope as I took my last steps. I tagged the summit and started down but realized there was no way to get out of the wind. So I just stopped and began transitioning. I was able to get everything on with some difficulty being wet and the wind blowing. Finally got my gloves on but Tom was having troubles with that process. Hands numb and wet he had particular difficulty. After a brief warming in the pits he was able to pull the gloves on and we departed down hill. Made it to the snow krumholtz and I went left and encountered some route finding issues trying to avoid the snow (bushwhacking). Eventually I just walked in it and glissaded to join the others. The walk down and out was cold and none of us were able to really warm up. Received a starburst candy from a kind passerby. None of us wanted to stop to snack because we were just cold. By the time I made it to the van I had started to warm up but was still wet from head to toe. Went back to the mansion and ate and showered. Ugh.
Weather report for the day was 13-16% chance of rain till 11, 50% chance thunderstorms 11-3.
Views would have been awesome if it was clear.
