Ascent Trip Report

Revisited Sleeping Giant to hike with Madeline for her 'Giant Master.' Started from the Chestnut Lane trail head on a road walk to intersect with the Blue Trail. Followed the Blue Trail out to Mt. Carmel Ave. and back (2+ miles), then continued on Blue to the summit tower. Switched to the Tower Trail for our descent to the main entrance as it started to rain at a moderate clip. Stopped to refill my water bottle at the park main gate, then continued to the Purple Trail. Made a quick side-trip up the Blue-White connector trail to the park pavilion, then doubled back to the Purple Trail once again. Continued on Purple along the river, and up past the old quarry ruins. Continued through the woods, stopping for lunch in the rain, where I removed my saturated windbreaker while Madeline finally donned hers. Made an out and back side-excursion on the Blue-Purple Connector, then continued on the Purple Trail all the way back to the Chestnut Lane trail head. Cumulative mileage for the day was around 10.5 miles. Just White, Green, and Nature Trails left and Madeline will have them all.

Highlights of the trip: Saw several toads hopping across the trail over the course of the day. Also, the skull and vertebrae of an unknown animal near the quarry. Also saw a red salamander. The rain drove the bugs away, and for that we were grateful.
