Ascent Trip Report

I ascended via Route 2 per Olympic Mountaineers. The road in is long but in good shape. There are a few water bars in the last couple of miles. The abandoned spur is a little inconspicuous; it only travels a short distance before ending in a turnaround/campsite. I was able to cross Steel Creek with my feet dry by getting creative with rocks and a root ball. On the North side of the stream the road is only a footpath as it hangs a left and crosses a lesser stream. The road/path was pretty easy to travel up to the first big switchback, where I decided to start my bushwhack early and shortcut the next switchback. This plan went okay, and I successfully intersected the path at ~3000'. A short walk brought me to the end of the "road" where some small trees are taking over. I then climbed ENE to the knoll above 3600' where there was a little snow, and continued NE to the saddle between Wonder West and the smaller pinnacles at the ridge end. The ridge was fairly easy to traverse on snow from here, and I decided to head around to the South side of the peak where there is a steep gully leading to the notch between the two main summit blocks. The gully was slightly sketchy - partially snowy and partially bare - and required some veggie climbing. I later realized that I could have climbed to the summit from the ridge with probably less fuss. At the notch I couldn't tell which peak was higher, so I climbed the East one first. Great views! It looked as though the West peak is very slightly taller, so I returned to the notch and scrambled up. No summit register that I could find. Someone else will have to carry one up. I descended the West side instead of down the gully.
