Ascent Trip Report

New York Butte, Keynot Peak, and Mount Inyo 17 hour loop hike with 12,000 feet of gain.

The road into Long John Canyon starts off good but slowly deteriorates. I wouldn't push a sedan much past BM 1188 but high clearance could go farther. Hike up to New York Butte took 5 hours. Heading north, stay well west of the top of the ridge to avoid brush and rocky terrain. After getting to the saddle at 9880' there is a bit of brush upon the initial ascent but then a generally good use trail to Forgotten Pass.

Ascending Keynot from Forgotten Pass requires a slow and tedious sidehill with lots of loose talus on the peaks steep western slope. Pergaps a better route would be the east side of the ridge. The descent of Keynot was made much more difficult by lots of steep snow on the peaks NE slope that had to be carefully traversed. Descending on the western side of the ridge did not appear feasible due to lots of rocky outcrops.

Mt Inyo was a nice peak with a cool forest and a 100 feet of boulders to the summit. The descent to Union Wash was a very fast scree descent. I got to Union Wash at dusk, making it difficult to navigate until getting to the road back to Owenyo Road.
