Ascent Trip ReportAfter having lunch on the summit of South Moat Mountain, we headed North on Moat Mountain Trail towards Middle Moat Mountain. The hike was a short 15 minutes and 0.6 miles to the summit, but was some of the nicest terrain of the hike.
The trail dipped down from the summit of South Moat Mountain onto the ridge connecting the two peaks. The trail snakes through a mix of stunted trees, and low alpine vegetation along granite slabs, and loose, sandy soil. The trail makes a short dip back below treeline where it crosses the col between the two peaks. From the col it's a quick hike up the ~105 feet of elevation gain to the summit of Middle Moat over a trail consisting of granite slabs, and a narrow paths through vegetation.
The summit of Middle Moat is much broader and flatter than that of South Moat, and the small elevation gain between the two peaks doesn't improve the view much. If anything the relatively small summit of South Moat makes the view better, and makes it seem a little more mountain-like.
We spent a few minutes on the summit taking pictures, and decided not to continue on to North Moat because we wanted to get back to the campsite and have a good chunk of time to do some swimming in the Saco River. The hike out was uneventful.
