Ascent Trip Report

This hike was part of an annual lab camping trip, and was my first year of participation as a lab alum. The hike was chosen to be relatively easy so most people would be able to complete it. The plan was to hit the summits of South Moat Mountain, and Middle Moat Mountain, take stock of the time and how people were feeling, and possibly hike on to North Moat Mountain. However North Moat was never a serious goal of the hike.

We started the ascent at around 10 AM on Monday. The sky was amazingly free of clouds, and the temperatures were in the low 80s. The first section of the trail through the woods was pleasant, easy walking.

The trail then reached the exposed granite ledges that lead to the summit of South Moat Mountain. The terrain to the summit was variable from here on. There were large, exposed granite slabs, some steps with moderate tree cover, and some steps covered with loose rock. The weather here became much more unpleasant, as there was little shade from the sun and only the occasional breeze, with mostly still air. We took a few rests on the way up to allow the slower members of our party to catch up.

We reached the summit around 12, and were greeted by a continuous, moderate breeze, which made things very pleasant. We spent 30-45 minutes eating lunch and relaxing on the summit, which had very nice views of Mount Chocorua to the SW, Mount Kearsarge to the NE, and Middle and North Moats, and the presidential range to the N. After lunch and relaxing we headed on to Middle Moat.
