Ascent Trip Report

I started from milepost 118.5 parking lot and ascended southwesterly. The snow was very crusty and my snowshoes weren't needed right away. I started at 8:30 and picked my way through the few trees along the way. I did find the remains of a bunny hanging from a short tree. As the day wore on the sun got higher and the snow started to soften. I dinned snowshoes around 5200' and continued up. The slope angle increased and I was getting a bit nervous about an avalanche as I didn't know how deep the snow was under me. Finally at one point my pole tip tinked on a rock below. Whew, not enough snow to slide, I felt relieved. Just when I thought I was near the summit I saw that I had several hundred feet yet to go.I took my time and picked my way up the slope. Finally I reached the top ridge. It was knife edged with snow dropping from the other side and a several hundred foot shear drop. I didn't stick up there but a few minutes as I didn't want to slip or anything. I descended a bit to take my obligatory summit video only to have my camera battery die on me. Oh well, I knew I made the summit. I glissaded a bit back down but ended up plowing more than I slid. Once back amongst the brush I broke through the soft snow up to my thighs even with snowshoes on. By 12:40 I was back at my car.
