Ascent Trip ReportDue to the various closures in the Angeles National Forest due to the Coronavirus situation, the Charlton Flats Picnic Area was closed. So we could not enter the area and drive to the trailhead. Instead, we parked at a large turnout a few hundred feet from the entrance to Charlton Flats and then walked from there.
The fog was very thick, which created a nice mystical effect with the large trees in Charlton Flat. We walked along the lower road until we reached the actual Vetter Mountain Trailhead. I think it added 0.7 miles to the hike each way. From there it was only 1.5 miles to the summit. Due to the April rains, the small seasonal creek along the trail was flowing nicely. Despite the horrible weather, it was just great to be out and hiking.
Unfortunately, at the summit, we could only see about 10 feet in front of us due to the intense fog. I imagine the view on a sunny day is spectacular. Appears that the fire lookout is under construction but near completion. There is a very nice sheltered picnic area just off the summit, with a few tables.
It was perfect for our crew.
Great outing. Probably 1 hour and 10 minutes up and then an hour down. Nothing too tough for the kids.
