Ascent Trip ReportI'd intended to do some of the smaller hills along forest road 2341 but after walking in a couple miles from road 23 I wasn't seeing any appealing looking ways up them, so I decided to just go up South Mountain. I didn't want to walk the long way around to the route described by previous reports, so I left road 2341 at the junction with the road coming in from the direction of the Vance Creek bridge. Heading north, the road soon split and I went left to the road end where I found a motorcycle trail which took me uphill to another road. I went left on that road to the end and then followed a game trail back right up a steep loose hillside. This got me to an overgrown road I went right on for a ways and then went uphill through forest to the mapped road junction just west of Point 2210. From there I walked the road to the summit, passing a couple tower installations along the way.
I thought I'd walk the road all the way for the descent, but after passing Point 2210 I got worried about just how far that might be, so I bailed off the side of the hill directly down to Road 2341 just a short distance south of where I had left it for the ascent. Unfortunately, the hillside was much brushier than the way I had come up. 15.5 miles RT. The roads are all in very good condition and bikeable.
