Ascent Trip Report

Camping in dispersed camping in the NF where the rangers said it was legal to stay away from people with the damn COVID pandemic we set up camp the night before and were the ONLY people in this dispersed camping area so we were VERY socially distanced. I got up from the tent and saw this sweet 500 foot plus prominent peak north of my tent and with a maintenance road to the top (4 wheel possibly but mostly rough 2 wheel). As sunrise occurred I hiked up the roads to the top only dropping once to find the only open pit toilet facility still open in all of NM possibly! Thus why the track takes an unnecessary turn down hill for a twist.

Other than that, it was straight up. Now be careful this track has a place where my GPS shut down and misread the distance coming down as indicated by the silly straight line where I actually bushwhacked near the road but not where the GPS indicated. Corrected this track was 1 mile up because of the trip to the pit, but could have been less than a half mile from the start of the maintenance road and 0.8 miles coming down. Because I explored the woods I got extra mileage and gain but this could have been more of a 1 mile RT and 400 feet of gain easy hike.

Later in the week I found other routes including a nice trail to the top (see next TR).

Note the road is closed with a gate before the summit but the NF allows you to walk around it and hike to the top!
